Thailand wants you to feel safe when you visit that country. As far as I know, no visitors have come to harm during the last few months of street protests in Bangkok over who should head the government. But to calm worries, the Thai government wants to offer visitors a low-cost insurance plan.
Thailand is one of the world’s most popular destinations, and now you can go on line before you travel and buy an insurance policy the Thai government calls the “Thailand Travel Shield.”
You may buy coverage for a broad range of unforeseen events ranging from accidents, trip cancellation, loss or damage of baggage / personal belongings, emergency hotel accommodation, and so on.
If you’re headed over for a week, you’ll pay $20 to buy a policy that provides up to $32,000 in instant coverage for medical emergencies or loss of life or limb. If your baggage is delayed, you can claim up to $235. Stay longer, and you get increased coverage for a slightly higher fee.
There are some exclusions. There is no coverage for harm caused by accidents while under the influence of alcohol, indulging in extreme sports, motorcycle riding, and getting involved in public brawls. I’d suggest you avoid all of those things not just in Thailand but everywhere else you travel. Or at home.
